If you are in an environment where you aren't concerned about making others sick or you are mainly concerned with protecting yourself from particulates, use the exhale valve alone without installing the filter housing and filter at the mouthpiece.
If you want maximum protection for yourself and concerned about exposing others around you from your exhalations (ie you are sick or you interact with immunocompromised individuals), use the exhalve valve and attach the filter housing. The filter and housing at the mouthpiece will filter your exhalations and further protect those around you.
